Without a doubt my favorite hike in Oregon.
Even though it’s only about 45 minutes from Portland, and the hike itself is probably only about 1.5 miles (at most) there and back, it has just about everything you need for a quick adventure.
From the parking area, take the stairs down to the bottom of the river and head up the creek (away from the road). Within a few minutes you’ll see a giant log jam just before the gorge starts to narrow. The logs are pretty slippery but there is plenty to grab onto.
Once you’re over the log jam it’s an easy hike through water that is knee high or less, that is until you get closer to the falls. There is one section you’ll have to wade through and it is chest deep on most people (could be higher if it’s early in the season or just rained.
The water isn’t warm so wear a bathing suit or something that can dry quickly. The good news is even if you get cold, it’s a short walk back so you won’t be cold for long.
If you’re following Google/Apple maps to get there from Portland, ounce you get off the highway and drive toward it, you’ll want to park just after you see a tunnel on the left side of the road. The bridge and steps to the trailhead are just on the other side of it.
