The Mueller Hut walk is without a doubt one of the most popular walks in the Aoraki/Mount Cook national park, and for good reason! this stupidly scenic walk provides you with incredible views over the National Park with its glaciers, Tarns and rock formations.
The hike is only around 5,4 km. (one way) however you will go up over 1100 meters during your hike. so prepare to get challenged and prepare to get sweaty! you will probably be looking at 3,5-4,5 hours of walking but it is all worth it when you reach the top! The Hike is kind of divided into two stages. The first two hours takes you to Sealy Tarns via approx. 1840 steps (i tried to count them on the way down…). At Sealy Tarns your likely to stop and take a break. the Stairs are steep and will most likely take your breath away if wearing warm cloth or carrying an overnight bag.
An unmarked alpine scramble through tussock and over big rocks awaits you on the second bit. definitely more enjoyable. it is also on this second bit of the hike you will cross the snow line and really feel the nature and wilderness surround you.
The Hut itself lies at 1800 meters on the Sealy Range with spectacular 360 degree panorama views encompassing NZ’s highest mountain – Mount Cook, The Mueller glacier, ice cliffs, vertical rock faces and beautiful sunsets/sunrises if you choose to stay over night. If you want to spent a night at the Hut, which you definitely should, remember to book it a couple of weeks in advance to avoid disappointment. My last tip is to bring a bottle of wine. you will regret it going up the stairs but once you reach the top, it will definitely be worth it!
Also remember that It’s really important to register prior to the Hike at the local DOC office, and to let them know once you’re back down.
