Your guide to Grindelwald, Switzerland

If words were capable of being transformed into a physical form, Switzerland would be something straight out of a fairytale. Although the country isn’t large, the diverse and vertical terrain make it one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit. Whether you want to see the legendary peak of the Matterhorn in Zermatt, enjoy a float on the glowing river in Bern, or venture into a village in the mountains, this place has a slew of options to fulfill any one of your travel needs.

Grindelwald is a small ski town, buried in the enthralling mountainous region known as the,”Bernese Oberland.” The train ride to get there will take you past majestic lakes, mystical rivers and countless mountains, which are covered in a sea of green – and the locomotive journey in itself makes the trip very worthwhile. In a landscape that looks like it’s straight out of a Ricola Cough Drop commercial, activity choices are plentiful. Snow-related options will occupy your time in the winter season, but here’s what we recommend for summer:

1) Take a hike! You’ll be surrounded by the mighty Swiss Alps, so go for a hike and soak up the freshest air you’ll ever breathe. It should be noted that certain trails will require you to be somewhat familiar with cardiovascular fitness; that is if you don’t want your lungs to plan a detailed escape from your body. The effort is worth it for the experience. If you’ve decided to take on some of the peaks, make sure you pack the appropriate hiking gear as the snow capped peaks are not the easiest terrain to navigate – but cablecar rides provide the perfect alternative, if needed.

2) Check out observatory at Jungfraujoch. Although the trip is a bit expensive (around $175 in USD to be exact), the highest railway in all of Europe takes you through the middle of a glacier and gives way to some of the best views on the planet. If you can afford the luxury, make sure to pack a camera. Views of Jungfrau are also available from other mountain tops like Schilthorn, if you’re looking to save your money but don’t expect it to be the same experience.

3) Buy an adventure package. Certain packages will offer a bundle of activities at a manageable price. One choice in particular (around $77) offers a gondola trip, a zip line ride and a scooter bike rental. These options coupled with a hike to Bachalpsee Lake, a cliff walk over dizzying heights and lunch on the most magnificent patio you will likely ever encounter (all free of charge), will leave you with an unforgettable day.

4) Explore town. The town is an inviting place with restaurant choices and various shops, all with a view. On specific days of the week the streets are closed down for food vendors, drinks and live music. The events are very fun and can be a good way to relax after a long day of adventuring.

5) Enjoy your surroundings. If the only thing you do is sit in a lawn chair by the river, drink a beer and look at the scenery, you will be pleased with your decision to make the journey.

6) Try the milk, cheese and chocolate! Happy cows make amazing dairy 😉

Grindelwald is seriously stunning. From the Alps that touch the clouds, to hidden mountain lakes, to the entrancing rivers and glaciers, the incredible charm will captivate and leave you anticipating your next visit.
